Why I Ask New Pupils to Complete a Booking Form

Starting driving lessons should be straightforward and stress-free — for pupils, parents, and instructors alike. Over the years, I’ve found that the best way to achieve this is by having everything clearly confirmed in writing before lessons begin.
That’s why I ask all new pupils to complete a short booking form before I can offer regular lesson slots.
I know forms aren’t everyone’s favourite thing, especially when life is already busy with work, school, college, and clubs. But there’s a very good reason for it — and it actually makes things easier for you.
Avoiding Mix-Ups Before They Happen
Most issues that arise early on aren’t about driving at all. They’re usually caused by:
misunderstandings about availability
mixed-up days or times
assumptions about start dates
confusion over policies such as cancellations or payments
A quick WhatsApp conversation can feel easier in the moment, but in practice this is where mistakes tend to happen. Details get missed, messages get buried, and memories don’t always match later on.
Having everything written down in one place avoids all of that.
What the Booking Form Does
The booking form allows me to:
clearly see a pupil’s availability
understand school, college, or work commitments
confirm that key information has been read and understood
make sure we’re both on the same page from the start
For pupils and parents, it means:
fewer messages back and forth
no confusion about lesson times
no surprises later on
a smoother, more organised start to learning
It protects both sides and keeps things fair and consistent.
Fixed Weekly Lesson Slots
One of the ways I keep lessons consistent and reliable is by offering fixed weekly lesson slots wherever possible. This means once a regular time is agreed, you know exactly where you stand each week.
It also avoids missed lessons caused by diary clashes or double bookings, and helps pupils make steady progress without long gaps between lessons.
To do this properly, I need accurate availability confirmed in advance — which is another reason the booking form is so important.
A Note About School Timetables
I completely understand that parents don’t always want to rewrite a full school timetable — and you don’t need to.
A simple photo or screenshot is absolutely fine. I only use this information to avoid clashes and to offer realistic lesson slots. Nothing more.
Why I Need This Before Offering Slots
I have a limited number of lesson spaces, and once regular slots are allocated, they’re difficult to change. To do this properly — and fairly — I need accurate information before committing times in my diary.
So while I’m always happy to answer questions or have a quick chat first, the booking form does need to be completed before lessons can be arranged.
A Better Experience for Everyone
This system isn’t about admin for the sake of it. It’s based on experience and is designed to:
reduce stress
prevent misunderstandings
keep lessons running smoothly
and help pupils get the most from their learning
If you ever have questions while completing the form, I’m more than happy to help.
Clear communication from the start makes for better lessons — and a better learning experience overall.
